Extensive Definition
The Slavey (also Slave) are a First
Nations
aboriginal people of the Dene group, indigenous
to the Great
Slave Lake region, in Canada's Northwest
Territories, and extending into northeastern British
Columbia and northwestern Alberta.
This name was previously spelled in English as
"Slave" but was changed to avoid confusion with the common noun
referring to slavery.
Likewise, in French the former name was Esclaves, literally meaning
persons in servitude.
